Balch Hotel

Had a wonderful stay at the Balch. Only 15 minutes from The Dalles. Rooms are well furnished and comfortable with unique views, dinner in the Bistro was really good (had shrimp linguine) in an intimate and romantic setting. The hotel spaces have authentic "old western" feel. This is a great place for a "slow down" from life and a very relaxing place. Remember to ask for a room with a private bath, as not all rooms have those and don't count on any TV's, as they don't exist here! But Wi-fi is very good.

Charming historic hotel, a welcome change from the boring chain hotel experience. Very quiet and relaxing, the grounds and local scenery are fantastic and worth a walk around. The staff were friendly and helpful in the most genuine way. The on site restaurant has a small but excellent menu, our dinner and light breakfast were perfect, the young chef was both skilled and attentive. The only let down we experienced was a complete lack of ghosts, apparently the place has a reputation but our night was free from hauntings. Worth a drive off the beaten path, you won't be disappointed.

We had a wonderful stay at the Balch Hotel. season. The beautiful Christmas decorations set a perfect stage for a holiday get away. Our room was quiet and comfortable. The Bistro provided an ideal setting for a visit with friends over a tasty and very satisfying meal. And the we can’t say enough about the friendly service we received.

This historical hotel is a charming gem. The decor takes you back to another time, and the Christmas decor adds a new level of coziness. Our room was comfortable, and our host was warm and attentive. We had a delicious dinner prepared by their chef, and for breakfast, a basket of goodies including a fresh baked muffin. With the old charm comes creaky floors, and that can be a distraction. The only thing missing is a big fireplace to sit by on a chilly night.

What a treat! An old hotel in the quiet town of Dufur, OR that is a welcome retreat from the busy city! I love historical places, but this is a little piece of heaven. The proprietor, Christina, is warm and welcoming, full of cheer and hospitality. So many amenities to offer in this 1907 landmark. The room, the parlor, the dining room, the beautiful grounds, all call to you. You want to spend time seeing it all and the sleepy town of Dufur; one night is not enough. You’ll be glad you came! Squeaking floorboards and thin walls lend to the true feel of an old, cherished building.
